The Game Plan

The general idea is to write about films, as I see them, which I do a lot.

I studied film at university and during that time worked out that I saw about 1000 films a year. It's slowed down now, with work, etc. but I wanted to keep a record of what I've seen and what I thought of those films. Some will be films I've seen before, others will be new; some will be watched by choice, others I might just happen to catch.

I also watch such a variety of films, from 'difficult' art films to light-hearted comedies, though not always by choice. I just felt that, if I intend to watch so many films, as I inevitably will, then I should share that experience by writing back. It's good for me too, to maintain a thinking response and a critical dialogue.

So my plan is to write about every film I see, as soon as possible, just gut reactions (I can always add to it later). I'm a film academic so I will write intelligently about serious films but at the same time I aim to make them accessible to anyone. People can respond and we can get some kind of discussions going on - if anyone even reads this...

I know there's probably lots of other people out there doing something similar, but from what I can tell they are all looking towards mainstream movies currently in the cinema, whilst I'll be watching films from around the world and from throughout the ages. Also, most people tend to respond in a very personal way to the films they watch, whilst I will try to write a reasonably objective critique, with as much information I can include from what I already know about cinema.

Finally, I'm completely new to blogging, never written one and never read one. I might not even be able to keep this up if I get too busy, but it's a new year and I might as well try. If you're still reading then thanks for your interest and I hop you come back - and I hope I can reward your attention with some useful insights and recommendations.
